Chemical Reactions

We are beginning our unit on physical and chemical changes! Today we wrote in our lab journal about the chemical reaction experiment we did!

What will happen when you mix a couple household chemicals: vinegar and baking soda? Is it powerful enough to blow up a balloon?

We were impressed!

I'm so happy for my sweet scientists!

Area and Perimeter

Today the pre-teens enjoyed finding both the area and perimeter of these funky shapes Mr. Moore and I created! We will be finishing up tomorrow!

For homework, they are to find the area of a room in their house!

Tomorrow is the spelling bee! Good luck Chris! We are rooting for you!

New Student (Teacher)!

Hello students, parents, and guardians!

My name is Jonathan Moore and for the next 15 weeks, I will be student teaching in Mrs. Doss' class. I am a graduate student in the ECCO program at UGA, on the path to becoming a full-fledged teacher with my own classroom. If all goes according to plan, I will be K-5 certified by the end of the school year and graduate with my Master's degree in December of this year. In 2007, I received my bachelor's degree in Comparative Literature.

Like my undergraduate degree might lead you to believe, I love literature. I am a friend to books and stories of all kinds, from comics to classics and the latest in children's books. I'm also an avid music listener who tries his best to make music as well, but I probably need a few more lessons. When I'm not reading or listening to music, I'm in the kitchen. I like to experiment with my food, but I'm not afraid to throw a frozen pizza in the oven either.

Since 2007, I've been working in schools. For 3.5 years I've worked at Oconee County Primary School in Watkinsville and I even spent a year overseas, teaching English at high schools in Japan. I'm sure this experience will be a great help to me as the weeks go by.

I'm looking forward to working with all of your students and the teachers here at South Jackson Elementary. I'm excited about teaching them, but even more enthusiastic about what they will undoubtedly teach me.

Parents! Do you want email alerts from SJ?

Parents,

We have a link to sign up for South Jackson email! If you would like to get the most up-to-date announcements follow the link HERE!

Have a great day!

Do you know how to divide fractions?

We sure do! We know how to Keep It, Switch It, Flip It!

Keep it = keep the first fraction the way it is!

Switch it = change the sign from division to multiplication!

Flip it = flip the last fraction upside down!

Then, find the product.

When I student taught in 8th grade with the LOVELY Leslie Lance and Tracey Kelley I learned this song. I was hoping I could use it when I taught and sure enough we cover this standard in 5th grade!

Happy Monday!
